The 45 Imp. Gal. steel barrel is the only type of container we use to export maple syrup. We don't use anymore 4L plastic jugs and plastic totes to export maple syrup. To ensure a long shelf-life, the entire inventory of maple syrup needs to be pasteurized in a perfectly airtight container. The plastic container does not allow perfect pasteurization of the maple syrup inside the container and will need to be refrigerated. Steel drums allow a shelf-life of over 10 years unlike the plastic containers which will need to be proceed quickly.
